Uruguay is one of the nine locations chosen by a panel of experts to enjoy the holidays amongst places such as England, Myanmar, The Maya Riviera, Chicago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean , the Netherlands, the Atlantic Coast of Canada and Orlando in 2012. It is clearly living up to it’s name as this year is was named in the Italian fashion Elle as the ‘New VIP Paradise’.
The U.S. chain CNN, who ranked the locations, sought the opinions of the travel specialists: Robert Reid, editor of Lonely Planet, Martin Rapp, senior vice president of leisure sales Altour, Anne Banas, executive editor of SmarterTravel and Jeanenne Tornatore, Orbitz.com editor.
Uruguay was selected because it has “extraordinary hotels that many tourists do not take into account” Rapp said. He further stressed the activities like horseback riding were excellent and the beaches “are completely untouched.”
The expert recommended “Beach and Estancia Vik Jose Ignacio, as well as the Hotel Fasano Punta del Este, in the main Uruguayan resort”.
Another destination was the World of the Maya, the ancient civilization of Mexico and Central America, which is listed by the ruins. Reid stressed Tulum, Chichen Itza and Chiapas in Mexico, and Tikal in Guatemala.
The Magazine ‘Elle’ stretches beyond the summer months and even recommends Uruguay as a holiday destination for any season to celebrate the silence and solitude of coastal Uruguay in the cooler months of August and September.
The travel writer, Annalisa Testa, writes about the abundance of “sumptuous villas, luxury hotels, clubs and resorts all immersed in nature. The Uruguay coast in wintertime is really special and exclusive”.
Punta del Este is described as the Miami of South America and Jose Ignacio as a calm Saint-Tropez.
