Just a few ays ago, the wheat harvest was completed on a test plot in the upper Paraguayan Chaco, in the Infante Rivarola area. It is a fact that was unthinkable only a few years ago, but that today is a prodigious reality achieved thanks to work, science and technology, as highlighted by the president of the Union of Production Guilds (UGP), Eng. Agr. Hector Cristaldo.
The Paraguayan Chaco registers the full stage of agricultural expansion and in this process, the incorporation of winter crops with adaptation to the environment, wheat is presented with fundamental importance, considering the effect it can generate on the rotation of summer crops and the opportunity to strengthen an income item in the Chaco agricultural chain, according to the analysis of the Paraguayan Chamber of Exporters and Marketers of Cereals and Oilseeds (Capeco).
Wheat is a temperate zone crop and its production in the Eastern region of Paraguay, located in a subtropical zone, required agronomic research and technological development for several decades. Now the cereal is positioning itself in a region normally more adverse for agriculture, which is the Paraguayan Chaco, thanks to the advance of research, science and the work of producers, agricultural technicians explained.
Lack of humidity is a problem
This union highlights that several establishments are incorporating wheat into their work plan, but without a doubt, the most important limitation is the availability of sufficient moisture in the soil profile for the efficient development of this crop.
In the 2022/2023 campaign, the planting of some 10 agricultural sectors, about 70,000 Ha of soybeans, 64,270 Ha of corn, 17,160 Ha of sorghum, 49,350 Ha of cotton, 3,930 Ha of peanuts, 360 Ha of chia, 26,900 Ha of sesame, 4,300 Ha of safflower and about 10,000 Ha of rice.
