Historical Export: Paraguay exports Stud sheep to Uruguay

Post available in: English Español

The sheep sector closes the year with an unprecedented achievement for the country: the export of live stud sheep to the demanding Uruguayan market. The establishments involved in the shipment are Granja San Bernardino, Py’aguapyrenda Cabin and Genetic Centre, and La Mocha Cabin, which sent 27 specimens of the Santa Inés and Dorper breeds to the aforementioned destination. The animals were acquired by Federico Burgueño and Mauricio Nicoletti, leading sheep breeders in Uruguay.

This is a historical and significant fact for Paraguayan livestock farming, especially for national sheep farming, demonstrating sheep genetics’ evolution, highlighted Lic. Harold Colmán is head of the Paraguayan Association of Sheep Breeders.

In turn, the owner of the Py’aguapyrenda Sheep Cabin and Biotechnology Center, Dr Carlos Krüssel, pointed out that the achievement constitutes another milestone in Paraguayan livestock production because, in 2019, they had already completed the first export of live sheep from Paraguay to Argentina, from specimens that were even great champions in the neighbouring country.

He noted that this achievement is due to the efforts of the producer and also to the support of institutions such as the National Animal Quality and Health Service (Senacsa).

The Py’aguapyrenda Sheep Biotechnology Cabin and Center is located in Ciervo Cuá, San Bernardino district, which specifically sent five standing female sheep from the Pure Pedigree Dorper breed, of which one is with a calf, and the other four are pregnant, according to Carlos Krüssel, owner of the aforementioned cabin.

He considered that Uruguay is another large sheep producer, with a herd of more than 6 million heads of said livestock, and that, as with Argentina, the possibility also opens up for producers of other breeds to sell sheep genetics to said market.

Historically, Paraguay imported embryos and live animals from Argentina and Uruguay, and they in turn did so from South Africa.
