A Contemporary Beach House in Uruguay with Unique Characteristics

Post available in: English Español

Located in the middle of a natural reserve with great forest extensions, countryside views and virgin beaches, you’ll find Casa  Calmo, a stunning contemporary beach house.

The location is called San Antonio de la Pedrera, 10 min north of La Pedrera (Rocha, Uruguay), a charming little town on the ocean’s edge. It is a young resort with solitary summer houses spread over 4km of an immense forest were pine trees, native trees and spices, vast dunes and virgin and inspiring beaches reign.

The force of nature is expressed with purity in San Antonio. Its lush vegetation is the perfect setting for unforgettable natural walks. Its beaches, which embrace the open ocean, offer dolphins, fish, sea lions, turtles and southern whales from the coast, who each year choose this step on their way to the North.

Placed in the forest of San Antonio, in this home, you´ll find the comfort of contemporary living designed by Architect Nicolás Cunto, well thought-out to connect and live with the surroundings. Every interior space expands to the outside in a large semi-covered gallery where you can enjoy being outside, even on a rainy day.

Fully equipped with carefully designed furniture for each space and premium quality facilities, Casa Calmo offers a unique experience: design, nature and comfort in the same place.

The Configuration

In the main structure, there are two primary independent units, both totally equipped (kitchen utensils, bedroom linen, dinner service, electrical appliances) connected by a semi-covered gallery but each with its own private space. There’s also an outside toilet and a traditional Uruguayan barbecue place.

One of the main units can accommodate 2 or 3 people, and the other main one can accommodate 4 or 5 people. Both are entirely private and count on their own external spaces.

You can also access the large rooftop terrace through a modern cement stairway where you can have amazing countryside and sea views.

Casa Calmo also has a third independent unit below the main building with a kitchen and a fully equipped bathroom that could accommodate 2 more people and can be ideally used for housekeeping or as a secondary apartment.

ABOUT SAN ANTONIO DE LA PEDRERA

San Antonio is located in the Municipality of Rocha, 6 km north of La Pedrera and 35 km south of Cape Polonio and Palmar de Rocha. It´s also 100 km from Chuy, the border with Brazil and 15 km north of La Paloma.

Declared a Natural Reserve, it features large virgin beaches extending more than 50 km long. Because they are adjoined with the open ocean, you can easily see sea wolves, sea turtles and some whales that choose those bays on their way north.

Close to San Antonio, in La Pedrera, you can find many bars, restaurants, supermarkets and stores where you can buy all kinds of articles and take beautiful walks.

In both La Pedrera and La Paloma, you can find great beaches to surf on!

TIPS – WHAT TO DO, WHERE TO GO AND BUY

Day Trips near San Antonio:

Oceanía del Polonio: This is a wonderful place to visit and spend the day! It is on km 255 of Route 10, going north. In the entrance by the road (there is not a  good indication of the entrance), you will find it by the big antenna. You must turn right and go all straight until you reach the sea. There is a good restaurant called Chez Silvia (not so cheap, but great food!)

Cabo Polonio Village: Going further north, you will reach this unique, preserved little village. It is located on km 264 of Route 10. You can get by car to the main entrance (this is well indicated) by the road, and there you have a parking lot to leave the car. Then you must get on 4×4 trucks that will take you to the little seaside town. It´s prohibited to go there in your own vehicle. The village has no electricity, a beautiful lighthouse, little restaurants serving fish, and huge gorgeous beaches where you can surf or swim. You have in/out transfers to the parking lot every hour.

Rocha Lagoon If you like to kite surf, kayak or swim in quiet waters, you can go to the mouth of Rocha Lagoon, where it reaches the sea. This place is also a lovely spot to spend the day or to go for the sunset on the Lagoon… It´s also a protected environment; you´ll find lots of birds and a small fishing town where you can sometimes buy fresh fish. The beach here is one of our personal favourite ones!

To get here, you have to head to La Paloma through Route 10, and when you reach the crossroad where you have to turn left to La Paloma, keep straight ahead and follow the earth road for some km (about 3 or 4 km) until you get to the Lagoon. You can´t get lost, and the scenery of that road is also beautiful.
