Get ready for the 120th Argentine Open Polo Championship this Saturday, December 7th held every year at the Campo Argentino de Polo in Palermo (Av. del Libertador & Dorrego). This event attracts the top polo players in the world and hosts one of the oldest and most prestigious events in the international polo calendar as well as being one of the main social events of Buenos Aires.  Plan on wearing a big brimmed hat and sipping on a glass of chilled champagne between chukkers.  Tickets for the individual matches are on sale through Ticketek Argentina and on the same day of each match at the stadium’s box office.  But be advised, tickets for the main matches and the best seats can sell out in a few hours, especially for the final match.

Eight of the top ten polo players in the world are Argentine. This is not by chance.  Argentine dominance of the beautiful sport has long been a well-established fact.  Argentina is more than just an economic anachronism and the home of tango.  It is one of the most fertile countries in the world, and its farms and ranches were at one time where the wealthy Argentine won his or her fortune – fortunes big enough to give rise to the expression common in the 1920’s and 1930’s, “as rich as an Argentine.”

Polo is a sport only the rich can afford to play.  One needs ample land for raising ponies, still more land for large and perfectly manicured polo fields, and the financial wherewithal to take to the road with at least six well-bred and highly trained polo horses to compete in tournaments around the world, typically with princes and kings.

And where there is money, the beautiful people follow.  Advertisers love the sport, which lends itself to promotion of luxury items of every kind, cars, watches, champagne and clothing.  If you want to find the beautiful people, come to witness a polo match in Buenos Aires.

This year a Canadian team, Alegria will be vying for the gold.  Do they have a chance?  Or will the Argentine team, La Dolfina, send them back home to the hockey rink?
