Buenos Aires….High on “LGBT” Bucket List
Buenos Aires, often called the “gay mecca of Latin America”, has so much to offer the LGBT community. To begin with, Argentina is, for the fourth consecutive year, one of the world’s preferred destinations for high-flying gay travellers. Argentina can also boast of being the most advanced country regarding same-sex marriage, being the first country in Latin America (10th in the world) to legalize civil unions of same-sex couples and to guarantee the spouses the same rights as a couple in a heterosexual marriage.
But Argentina can claim to be the first country in the world to allow transsexual people to legally change their gender without the approval of either a judge or doctor. Liberalization in the laws affecting gays and lesbians, plus the recent devaluation of the Argentine Peso, has prompted an interest in gay tourism and real estate investment, particularly from the United States.
Buenos Aires, with its European feel, open-minded philosophy and vibrant night scene, allows the LGBT community to feel comfortable. Although there isn’t a gay neighbourhood as such, gays and lesbians come to Buenos Aires to satiate themselves with the country’s fine wines, gourmet dining, luxury hotels and temporary apartments that populate the city.
Recoleta, Barrio Norte, Palermo and San Telmo have a particularly gay feel plus offer a feeling of security as well. “Knowing that in Argentina you’re going to be welcome and your civil rights are going to be ensured has a lot to do with travellers’ desire to come to Argentina,” said Pablo de Luca director of the Argentine Chamber of Gay and Lesbian Commerce.
And one must take note that the “Paris of South America’s” Gay Pride Parade is held every year on the 1st Saturday of November to celebrate the first ever gay group in Buenos Aires in 1969.
